Good evening folks,
Just wanted to say thanks to all that attended
our annual Scott/Low ancestry meeting today and to those of you
that were unable to attend it was enjoyed by all. We had a total
of 19 members who were in attendance with which included 4 individual
that this was their first to attend.
Those in attendance were:
Harold and Ruby Smith of Gadsden Al., Wayne and
Gloria Gregg of Boaz Al., LInda Story of Attalla Al., Eddie D. Scott of Boaz
Al., Barron and Jane Scott of Cullman Al., Hazel Ann Scott DIxon and Ray Dixon
of Southside Al., Bonnie Brown Childs of Southside along with her 92
year old mother Verna J. Gilliland Brown of Southside Al., Janet Bearden of
Albertville Al.,
Tyrus and WIllene Waters of Enterprise Al.,
Billy R. WIlborn of Albertville Al., John R. Haynie of Acworth Ga., along with
myself Gene Loyd and my wife Sheila.
To give each of you an update Eddie D. Scott
of Boaz gave each of us a update on Scott DNA testing that he had done over the
past 1 1/2 year. Eddie who had taken the for like of better choice of
words "OLD" DNA testing that involved taking a cotton swab inside the
mouth and comparing the analysis to others who had taken the
test. I newer more precise version of DNA testing is now available
through "Ancestry.Com" that is more accurate, plus it gives considerable
more information and comparisons. Eddie in taking the ancesty.com version
of DNA testing with involved giving a sample of "Spittum" revealed something
that many of us that are related to Lawrence Scott Jr. had discussed, and
wondered about for year, that being was Lawrence Scott Jr's wife Winnie being
from Cherokee ancestry. According to Eddie there was no Indian ancestry that
showed in this DNA testing. We appreciate the information that Eddie passed on
concerning the DNA testing project, it will only aid us in our quest to further
research our Scott family history.
Wayne Gregg reported that Eddie and Wayne
were attempting to gather some information on the possiblity that Lawrence Scott
Sr's may have participated in the Indian War's early 1800's and may
possibly have draw a pension. I reported that there was a "James L. Scott"
that was listed in Michael Mortons artillery unit that fought/stationed at Fort
Strothers during Andrew Jackson march to the Battle of Horseshoe
Bend.
Project: The group discussed the
possiblity of securing a marker to be placed as a memorial for our Lawrence
Scott Sr. and Elizabeth Low Scott. Mr. Tolton former principal of Duck Springs
School and and Kyuka cemetery person reported that two graves had been
discovered in the roadbed adjacent to the area where William P. Scott and family
are buried and feel that it possibly could have belonged to Lawrence
Sr. and wife. Due to the fact that attempting to answer that question
is next to impossible it was suggested and a motion made that we work toward
securing a marker. I will be reporting back on the progress
of securing a marker and keep in mind that we may attempt to have a
dedication ceremony next spring to commemorate the marker. I will most
definitely keep everyone informed as we progress on this and at the same time if
anyone has a price quote please let me know.
Thanks to all who attended
Gene
